Description

The Kazanlak Thracian tomb is a masterpiece of ancient architecture with unique frescoes from the IV-III centuries BC. It is located on the Tulbeto hill. The tomb is the only in Bulgaria completely preserved monument of paintings from the Early Hellenistic era. It was accidentally discovered in 1944 by soldiers who, while digging a trench, came across a stone wall. Their curiosity led them to break it down, after which they entered a low and narrow corridor leading to a circular sunken room. This is how they discovered the tomb of the Thracian ruler Roigos, later declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. After its discovery, a special air-conditioning system was built to preserve the valuable frescoes. An exact replica of the tomb was built next door and is open to visitors. Today, thousands of tourists from all over the world annually visit the Kazanlak Thracian Tomb, which ranks among the most valuable archaeological monuments in Bulgaria.
