Description

The Helvetia Mound is a Thracian cult building in the Valley of the Thracian Rulers, discovered on 26 July, 1996, during an expedition led by Georgi Kitov. The archaeological site is part of the mound necropolis of Shushmanets and is located near the town of Shipka. The rectangular burial chamber and the open antechamber are covered with a common cantilever vault made of large, well worked blocks connected with iron brackets cast with lead. The dromos is wide and long, made of blocks of different size and workmanship on clay solder. The walls of the burial chamber and anteroom are covered with a thin layer of pike plaster, which in relief imitates masonry. Where the plaster is disturbed, multi-coloured walls are visible, which according to Georgi Kitov indicates at least two periods of use.
